Class Features
A Planar Ranger does not gain the Swift Tracker and Camouflage class features.
Class Skills
A planar ranger adds Arcane Lore and Linguistics to his list class skills.
Wild Empathy
A planar ranger suffers a -4 penalty to wild empathy checks when dealing with Animals and Beasts but suffers no penalty when dealing with Magical Beasts.
Favored Environment
At 3rd level, a planar ranger selects a single plane of existence rather than a particular an environment as his favored environment. He may not select his home plane (a fire elemental can’t select the plane of Fire, a human typically can’t select the material plane, and so forth). While on his favored plane, the planar ranger gains all the benefits of his favored environment ability regardless of the specifics of the local environment on that plane.
At 8th level and every five levels thereafter (at 13th and 18th level), the planar ranger must make a choice. He may choose to increase the benefits of his favored plane by +2 or to choose a new favored plane. If he gains a new favored plane, then the bonus of any existing favored planes does not increase. If he chooses to increase the bonus of an existing favored plane, then he does not gain a new favored plane.
Animal Companion
A planar ranger’s animal companion may gain either the celestial or the fiendish template; however, a celestial animal companion will never serve an Evil ranger nor will a fiendish animal companion serve a Good ranger.
Portal Sense
At 8th level, a planar ranger becomes exceptionally familiar with the workings of portals, gates, and similar means of planar transportation. Each round that a planar ranger studies a particular portal, he can make one of the following checks. The DC to succeed on any of these checks is 20.
- Arcane Lore to determine onto which plane the other end of the portal opens and whether or not it’s stable or random.
- Natural Lore to determine the environmental and planar conditions on the other side.
- Natural Lore to determine if the portal is one-way or two-way and whether or not it is malfunctioning.
- Arcane Lore to determine any special requirements or limitations of the portal, such as needing a command word, being limited to only living creatures, a limit on the number of creatures it can transport before shutting off, or other such features.
In addition, a planar ranger can make a DC 20 Perception check to determine if a portal or other planar breach has manifested in the local area within the local area. He can active portals with this ability, even if they are hidden, and he may detect inactive or closed portals if they were open within the last 2 hours per class level. Once discovered, the planar ranger may examine it as described above.
This ability replaces the normal ranger’s swift tracker ability.
Planar Tracker
Once per day, a planar ranger can use plane shift as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his class level. This functions exactly as the spell.
If the planar ranger is actively tracking his quarry that traveled to another plane, he may use this ability to plane shift to the exact location that his quarry arrived, without deviation. The planar ranger will need to begin tracking his quarry again after arriving.
This ability replaces a normal ranger’s camouflage ability.
