Spontaneous Spellcasters

Some spellcasters cast spells without need for a spellbook or tedious spell preparation, such as Sorcerers and Bards. For a spontaneous spellcaster, his class level limits both the number of spells he can cast each day and the number of spells he knows. A high ability score might allow him to cast a few extra spells, but his primary casting ability score must be at least 10 + a spell’s level for him to cast the spell.

Rest and Daily Readying of Spells

Each day, a spontaneous caster must focus his mind on the task of casting his spells. He needs the benefits of a Long Rest, after which he spends 15 minutes concentrating. During this period, the spellcaster readies his mind to cast his daily allotment of spells. Without such a period to refresh himself, he does not regain the spell slots he used up the day before.

Recent Casting Limit

As with prepared spellcasters, any spells cast within the last 8 hours count against a spontaneous spellcaster’s daily limit.

Adding Spells to a Spontaneous Caster’s Repertoire

Spells Gained at a New Level

A spontaneous spellcaster gains spells each time he attains a new level in his class and rarely gains spells any other way. When he gains a new level, consult his class table of Spells Known to learn how many spells from the appropriate spell list he now knows.

A spontaneous spellcaster may, with DM permission, select the spells they gain from new and unusual spells that they have gained some understanding of.

Independent Research

A spontaneous spellcaster can also research spells independently, duplicating an existing spell or creating an entirely new one. See Researching New Spells for more information.
