Backpack

Small – Price: 2 gp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 100; Capacity: 100
Medium – Price: 5 gp; Weight: 4 lb.; Bulk: 225; Capacity: 225
Large – Price: 10 gp; Weight: 6 lb.; Bulk: 350; Capacity: 350

The typical adventurer’s backpack was a rigid frame of wood or metal and straps designed to distribute weight. Most also have a quick release so that they can be immediately dropped should battle begin unexpectedly.

An adventurer’s backpack has special straps for attaching a tent and bedroll (or similarly sized storage bags) that do not take up bulk within the pack’s storage.

Barrel

Price: 2 gp; Weight: 30 lb.; Bulk: 500; Capacity: 450

A common barrel is constructed of wood with metal ring reinforcements. A standard barrel holds 75 gallons.

Bedroll

Price: 1 sp; Weight: 5 lb.; Bulk: 5

This consists of two woolen sheets sewn together along the bottom and one side to create a bag for sleeping in. Some have cloth straps along the open side so the bedroll can be tied closed while you are sleeping. It can be rolled and tied into a tight coil for storage or transport. Most people use a blanket with the bedroll to stay warm or provide a ground cushion.

Block and tackle

Price: 5 gp; Weight: 5 lb.; Bulk: 5

Whether it is used to hoist treasure from a pit or move supplies, a simple block-and-tackle pulley, when it is properly secured, adds a +5 circumstance bonus on Strength checks to lift heavy objects. Securing the pulley requires 1 minute.

Bottle, glass

Price: 2 gp; Weight: —; Bulk: 1

This glass bottle, often used to store and sell wine, holds about a pint and includes a cork.

Bucket

Price: 5 sp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 30; Capacity: 30

A bucket filled with liquid holds about 5 gallons.

Caltrops

Price: 1 gp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 3

A caltrop is a four-pronged iron spike crafted so that one prong faces up no matter how the caltrop comes to rest. You scatter caltrops on the ground in the hope that your enemies step on them or are at least forced to slow down to avoid them. One 2-pound bag of caltrops covers an area 5 feet square.

Each time a creature moves into an area covered by caltrops (or spends a round fighting while standing in such an area), it runs the risk of stepping on one. Make an attack roll for the caltrops (base attack bonus +0) against the creature. For this attack, the creature’s shield, armor, and deflection bonuses do not count. If the creature is wearing shoes or other footwear, it gets a +2 armor bonus to AC. If the attack succeeds, the creature has stepped on a caltrop. The caltrop deals 1 point of damage, and the creature’s speed is reduced by half because its foot is wounded. This movement penalty lasts for 24 hours, until the creature is successfully treated with a DC 15 Heal check, or until it receives at least 1 point of magical healing. A charging or running creature must immediately stop if it steps on a caltrop. Any creature moving at half speed or slower can pick its way through a bed of caltrops with no trouble.

Caltrops may not be effective against unusual opponents.

Candle

Price: 1 sp; Weight: —; Bulk: 0.2

A candle dimly illuminates a 5-foot radius and burns for 1 hour.

Case, map or scroll

Price: 1 gp; Weight: ½ lb.; Bulk: 5

A bone, leather, or wooden scroll case easily holds four scrolls; you can cram more inside but retrieving any of them becomes a full-round action rather than a move action. You must destroy the scroll case to damage its contents (hardness 2 for leather or 5 for wood, 2 hit points, Break DC 15). A scroll case is not water-tight.

Chain

Price: 30 gp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 5

Chain has hardness 10 and 5 hit points. It can be burst with a DC 26 Strength check.

Crowbar

Price: 2 gp; Weight: 5 lb.; Bulk: 5

A crowbar grants a +2 equipment bonus on Strength checks made for such purposes. If used in combat, treat a crowbar as a one-handed improvised weapon that deals bludgeoning damage equal to that of a club of its size.

Flask

Price: 3 sp; Weight: 1.5 lb.; Bulk: 1

A flask holds 1 pint of liquid and weighs 1 lb. when full.

Flint and Steel

Price: 1 gp; Weight: —; Bulk: 0.2

Lighting a torch with flint and steel is a full-round action, and lighting any other fire with them takes at least that long.

Grappling Hook

Price: 1 gp; Weight: 4 lb.; Bulk: 4

Throwing a grappling hook requires a ranged attack roll, treating the hook as a thrown weapon with a range increment of 10 feet. Objects with ample places to catch the hook have an AC of 5.

Hammer

Price: 5 sp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 2

If a hammer is used in combat, treat it as a one-handed improvised weapon that deals bludgeoning damage equal to that of a spiked gauntlet of its size.

Ink

Lantern, Bullseye

Price: 12 gp; Weight: 3 lb.; Bulk: 5

A bullseye lantern provides clear illumination in a 60-foot cone and shadowy illumination in a 120-foot cone. It burns for 6 hours on a pint of oil. You can carry a bullseye lantern in one hand.

Lantern, Hooded

Price: 7 gp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 5

A hooded lantern clearly illuminates a 30-foot radius and provides shadowy illumination in a 60-foot radius. It burns for 6 hours on a pint of oil. You can carry a hooded lantern in one hand.

Lock

Simple – Price: 20 gp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1
Average – Price: 40 gp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1
Good – Price: 80 gp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1
Superior – Price: 150 gp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1

The DC to open a lock with the Engineering skill depends on the lock’s quality: simple (DC 20), average (DC 25), good (DC 30), or superior (DC 40).

Manacles

Price: 15 gp; Weight: 2 lb.; Bulk: 5

Manacles can bind a Medium creature. A manacled creature can use the Acrobatics skill to slip free (DC 30, or DC 35 for masterwork manacles). Breaking the manacles requires a Strength check (DC 26, or DC 28 for masterwork manacles). Manacles have hardness 10 and 10 hit points.

Most manacles have locks; add the cost of the lock you want to the cost of the manacles.

For the same cost, you can buy manacles for a Small creature.

For a Large creature, manacles cost ten times the indicated amount, and for a Huge creature, one hundred times this amount. Gargantuan, Colossal, Tiny, Diminutive, and Fine creatures can be held only by specially made manacles.

Mug/Tankard, Clay

Price: 2 sp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1

A tankard holds about 1 pint of liquid.

Oil, Lamp

Price: 1 sp; Weight: 1 lb.; Bulk: 1

A pint of lamp oil burns for 6 hours in a common lantern or lamp. You can use a flask of oil as a splash weapon. Use the rules for alchemist’s fire, except that it takes a full round action to prepare a flask with a fuse. Once it is thrown, there is a 50% chance of the flask igniting successfully.

You can pour a pint of oil on the ground to cover an area 5 feet square, provided that the surface is smooth. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 1d3 points of fire damage to each creature in the area.
