You detect treasure and objects with intrinsic value, such as precious metals, coins, and gems. This spell may fail to detect art objects or other items of significance if you would not recognize their value. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject.
1st Round
Presence or absence of treasure.
2nd Round
Number of different treasures and the valuation of the most expensive treasure.
3rd Round
The valuation and location of each treasure. If the location or creatures bearing the treasure are in line of sight, you can make Profession skill checks to appraise each item. (Make one check per treasure, using the rules to Appraise an Item.)
A collection of the same type of treasure, such as a bag of gold coins or stack of mithril ingots, is detected and valued as a single treasure.
A large collection of treasure, multiple types of treasure, or exceptionally valuable treasure may distort or conceal the auras of less valuable treasures.
Treasure Valuation
A treasure’s valuation depends on a treasure’s market price, ignoring any magic. For example, a +3 flaming longsword would only register as Moderate, worth 315 gp, the same as a masterwork longsword. The magic effects are simply ignored by this spell. See the accompanying table.
Treasure | Treasure Valuation | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Least | Minor | Moderate | Greater | Exceptional | Peerless | Epic | |
Market Price | < 1 gp | 1 – 99 gp | 100 – 999 gp | 1,000 – 9,999 gp | 10,000 – 99,999 gp | 100,000 – 199,999 gp | 200,000+ gp |
Items which have been summoned or conjured via magic are detected as being worthless by this spell, unless they were created by an instantaneous effect and are otherwise completely real items (e.g. items created through high-level magic such as wish).
Each round, you can turn to detect treasure in a new area. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.
Detect treasure can be made permanent with a permanency spell.
