You sense the direction of a well-known or clearly visualized object. You can search for general items, in which case you locate the nearest of its kind if more than one is within range. Attempting to find a certain item requires a specific and accurate mental image; if the image is not close enough to the actual object, the spell fails. You cannot specify a unique item unless you have observed that particular item firsthand (not through divination).

If you already know the location of a specific object, you can mentally tag it to exclude it from the effect of this spell. For example, if you use this spell to locate a dagger, you can choose to exclude the dagger hanging from your own belt. You can mentally tag any item you can see as a standard action, excluding it from the spell. The spell then changes to locate the next closest item of that type without needing to cast the spell again. Changing the type of object you are locating requires casting the spell again.

The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it. Creatures cannot be found by this spell. Polymorph any object and nondetection fool it.
